Ranking Is Not Enough Anymore. Google Wants to Cite You

You can rank on page one and still lose the click. Google’s AI Overviews answer the question at the top of the results, so fewer people scroll down to your page.

What the data shows

Pew Research tracked tens of thousands of real searches. People clicked a traditional result 8 percent of the time when an AI summary appeared, against 15 percent when it did not. That is close to half.

SparkToro found that fewer than one in three Google searches now send a click to any website. Studies disagree on the exact traffic loss because they measure different things, but they agree on the direction.

Who loses first

Informational searches take the hit: how-to, what-is, and comparison queries. Those are the topics most small business blogs were built around. Branded searches hold up better. One analysis found branded queries with an AI Overview saw higher click-through.

The new goal is to be cited

Seer Interactive’s 2026 study found pages cited inside an AI Overview earn more than double the organic clicks of uncited pages on the same queries. The prize has moved from ranking to being the source the answer quotes.

What to do about it

Put the direct answer in the first lines under each heading, then expand.

Use question-style headings and a short FAQ section.

Add structured data for your business, articles, and FAQs, so machines can read your facts.

Check that AI crawlers are allowed. Many sites block them by accident through a CDN or security setting. If they cannot read you, they cannot cite you.

Publish specifics: real data, real examples, your own experience. Thin posts are the first to be replaced by a generated summary.

Technical health feeds into this too, as we covered in why website speed is no longer just an SEO metric.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SEO dead?

No. Rankings still feed what AI tools cite. The goal widens from ranking well to being quoted.

Should I stop blogging?

No. Stop writing generic posts that any summary can replace. Write answers that carry facts and experience.
