Passkeys Are Now a Cyber Insurance Requirement, Not a Nice-to-Have

Passwords have a known weak point: they can be phished. Passkeys remove that weak point entirely, using device-based cryptography instead of a typed secret. For years that made them a nice security upgrade. In 2026, cyber insurers turned it into a financial decision.

What changed

Research this year put 87 percent of US and UK businesses in the process of deploying passkeys, a sharp jump from consumer-only adoption a few years ago. Microsoft began automatically enabling passkey profiles across all Microsoft 365 tenants in March, meaning the infrastructure is already sitting in most business accounts whether anyone turned it on or not.

Cyber insurers are the real driver. Carriers increasingly treat phishing-resistant login as a baseline requirement for coverage, not an optional upgrade, and some now require it specifically for privileged and admin accounts. Businesses that can demonstrate it see premium reductions in the range of 15 to 30 percent. Businesses that can’t are facing premium increases of 40 to 60 percent, or denied coverage outright, at renewal.

Why this matters even without a cyber policy

Phishing is still behind the large majority of breaches, and it’s also the entry point for the AI-generated phishing emails we covered in our earlier post on that threat. A password can be phished no matter how strong it is. A passkey, tied to your device and biometrics, has nothing to phish.

What a realistic rollout looks like

Start with your highest-risk accounts: admin logins, finance tools, anything touching customer data. If you run Microsoft 365 Business Premium or Google Workspace Business Plus, passkey support is already included. Enable it for a small pilot group first, not the whole team at once, and make sure account recovery is documented before you turn it on broadly. Most small business rollouts run passwords and passkeys side by side for a transition period rather than cutting over in one step.

FAQ

Do passkeys automatically satisfy cyber insurance requirements?

Not automatically. It depends on your specific policy and insurer, but passkeys are the practical way most businesses meet the phishing-resistant MFA bar insurers are asking for.

What’s the biggest reason rollouts stall?

Account recovery. If someone loses their device, you need a documented way back in. Solve that before enabling passkeys on anything critical.
